Strover's View:

Sunday August 11th 2007 was a bad day for the club. Despite having a fairly strong line up we fell to a bit of a hammering to Eldene Social Club by 6-3. The defeat I can just about take but the constant bickering, biting back and general arguing wasn't a good thing to witness on the touchline. It made good players, and good blokes too, look like petulant school kids who couldn't get their own way. Things said in the heat of the moment on a football pitch are just that, 'heat of the moment', often said in anger or without prior thought. If you've made a mistake or error during play face up to it, everyone one of us does it from time to time, just because someone shouts at you doesn't mean you can deflect the blame or hide behind your indignation. Likewise those that constantly whinge, criticise and point out other's errors should look at themselves first and remember how you do put your point of view across. How would you react to the same criticism aimed at you in the same way? It's a team game about a group of individuals working together in unison towards the same aim. My personal point of view is that what happened against Eldene Social Club was unacceptable and shouldn't be repeated. I'm all for passion, belief and a strong will to win but pointless bickering, constantly arguing the point (just for the sake of it) and shirking responsibility is not a part of any team game or plan. Everyone on this team is a man and whilst not condoning the philosophy of Mussolini's Fasci Italiani di Combattimento I do stand by their motto, "United we stand. Divided we fall". If we fail again this season lads the blame lies within us all.

Sunday August 5th 2007 is the start of the 2007-08 season. Matt Hodey and to a lesser extent myself have tried to hard to recruit new players who will make a difference to the club and this has worked, albeit not fully. Four were approached and two came in, although one of these cannot play every game due to family commitments, one from last season Ben Fitzgibbon has sadly left the club. Neither of the new players will be available for the first game on Sunday when the 'old guard' of the club take on Division One high flyers Jovial Monk. The pub based team have surged through the divisions in recent years and now sit at the pinnacle of the Swindon Sunday League in Division One. Two season's ago they made the Swindon Sunday Football League Knock Cup Final but were outclassed by a very strong Wroughton WMC team 8-0! Make no mistake Wroughton are a very strong team and although the margin of defeat was a little on the 'hefty' side it was no embarrassment. This team will not be an easy team to best, even in a 'friendly'. It'll be interesting to see how some of players fair against an opposition that in no way can be described as 'numpties' and therefore should be worthy of their best efforts...
